Job Description:

Your work as a Electrician Apprentice is to assist Journeyperson in all aspects of electrical/control trade, maintaining shop machinery, tools, equipment, and reading/interpreting blue prints. Gain knowledge and experience during the apprentice training period. Upon successful completion of apprenticeship, employee will be classified as a Journeyperson.

This is a union position within the Building Trades Council bargaining unit (BTC).

The rate of pay for a Step 1 Electrician Apprentice is $17.68/hr.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Mechanical aptitude for equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills, customer relations skills, and the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Must belong to the local Electrician Union or be able to join within 30 days after starting employment at Cornell.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license; may be required to operate a motor vehicle (your own vehicle or Cornell-owned) to travel to/from job sites.
  • Ability to maintain safe work environment.
  • Risk exposure to asbestos, toxic vapors, heat, cold, height and accumulated dirt.
  • Availability to work overtime as duties require, including weekends.Possibility of shift work.
  • Able to ascend and descend heights and have agility and freedom of movement.
  • Climb stairs and ladders.
  • Able to move easily in confined spaces.
  • Ability to wear a respirator and other employer-provided safety equipment.
  • Ability to lift and/or move at least 50 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

Work experience in the electrical/control field and formal training beyond high school strongly desired.

This job provides the opportunity to learn from and work with journeyperson electricians who take great pride in their work for the University. You will have the opportunity to work within all the Units in the Facilities Management Zone organization, gaining experience in electrical infrastructure, motors & drives, pumps, generators, fire alarm/card access /security systems, as well as HVAC controls and various other infrastructure equipment that requires electrical components to operate. You will work alongside established and knowledgeable journeypersons throughout your apprenticeship, doing rewarding work that supports the University’s mission of teaching, research, and outreach.
